Sweden is shifting to digital TV. The analog broadcasting is going to be fully shut down in 2007. Still there are lots of usability problems to solve here. I will focus on the ones that annoy me the most.Set top boxes won't do. Lack of built-in digital receivers is a problem for the users. They will discover that the first time they want to schedule recordings.Customers hate being ripped off. Why pay for things more than once, why should I pay additionally subscriptions fees if I want to view one show and record another? The scenario is as follows. I Plan to move and a quick calculation show that I currently have three TVs and two VCRs. This will at the moment require five(!) subscriptions and boxes. Still I will not be able to schedule recordings as the VCRs can't control the boxes. Yeah, there is a multidude of solutions to my dilemma, card splitters, card sharing, home built media centers, etc. The fact is that not one of these solutions goes all the way. They need hours of tweaking and tampering to get it working if it ever will. I want plug a play now!My whish list:

  • One centralized unit with dual (or more) receivers that are used instead of the VCRs - Lets call it a DVCR, that uses any proper network store.
  • One central place that shares subscription among my devices - Call it a SubServer.
  • Video units for ordinary TVs. Decode using the SubServer and act as front end for scheduling the DVCR. Also use it to view personal videos and photos.
  • Small audio units for my audio equipment that can grab the music from my store as well as stream music from internet radio.
